How to Apply for a Study Permit

Studying in Canada

If you plan to study in Canada for longer than six months, you must obtain a study permit before beginning your program.

Short-term studies lasting six months or less may not require a study permit, but students enrolling in full diploma or certificate programs at Royal Pacific Institute are required to hold a valid study permit.

For complete information about applying for a study permit, please visit the official Government of Canada website:

If you intend to hire an immigration consultant to assist with your application, please ensure the consultant is properly licensed.

You can verify an immigration consultant’s license status through the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) website:

Student Visa vs. Study Permit

In Canada, there is a distinction between a student visa and a study permit:

  • The student visa (also known as a Temporary Resident Visa, TRV) allows you to enter Canada.
  • The study permit authorizes you to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) during your stay.

Most students will require both: a visa to enter Canada and a study permit to remain and study legally.

Important Considerations When Applying for a Study Permit

1. Genuine Purpose of Study

Your application must clearly demonstrate that your primary intent is to pursue full-time studies at a recognized institution in Canada.

2. Proof of Sufficient Financial Resources

You must show that you have enough funds to cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs.

For detailed financial requirements, please refer to:

3. Processing Times

Study permit processing times vary by country. We recommend applying well in advance of your program start date.

You can check the current processing times at:

4. Honesty in Your Application

If you have any prior refusals from the United States or Canada, you must disclose them truthfully. Attempting to conceal this information can result in refusal or future inadmissibility.

5. Letter of Acceptance (LOA)

You must first apply to Royal Pacific Institute.

After being accepted, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and PAL, which are required documents for your study permit application.

6. Notification to the School

Once you have submitted your study permit application, please notify our admissions office.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will contact Royal Pacific Institute to confirm your accepted status.

7. Co-op Work Permit Requirement

Since many of our programs include a mandatory practicum or clinical placement, you must apply for a co-op work permit along with your study permit application.

This will allow you to legally participate in the practical training components of your program.
